The 27 Most Important State
Legislative Proposals of 2009 for the Long Beach Business
Community and How Long Beach's Legislators Voted
This past year was another busy
year for the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce as the Chamber
focused its advocacy efforts on the 27 most important
legislative proposals that would have the greatest impact on the
Long Beach business community. The Chamber studied each proposal
and took a position of support or opposition by communicating
those positions with each Long Beach legislator. This year, most
legislators scored below the 50 percent mark, with the exception
of State Senator Rod Wright and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“Our vote records underscore the
need for our business community to remain vigilant when
communicating our positions to our legislators,” stated Joanne
Davis, Chair of the Long Beach Chamber’s Government Affairs
Committee. “We cannot continue down the same path with our
legislators as we did this year. Our legislators need to know
that their decisions in Sacramento have a direct impact on the
economic conditions in Long Beach and we need to work with them
in order to prevent low scores in the future,” continued Davis.
“The Long Beach Area Chamber has
the responsibility to work with our local state legislators to
inform them of our business community’s point of view on
important issues,” stated Randy Gordon, President and CEO of the
Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. “As we move forward into
the last year of the legislative session, the Chamber will
continue to communicate its positions with area legislators and
educate each of them on the importance of their decision on the
Long Beach business community,” continued Gordon.
The Long Beach Chamber lobbied
Senators Alan Lowenthal, Jenny Oropeza and Rod Wright and
Assembly Members Warren Furutani and Bonnie Lowenthal to OPPOSE
17 legislative proposals and SUPPORT 10 proposals. The Chamber’s
positions on each of the 27 legislative proposals were available
on this web site including summaries and explanations of why the
Chamber opposed and supported each proposal.
To reach the “Percentage FOR
pro-jobs legislation,” the Long Beach Chamber tallied the number
of times our legislators voted for the Chamber’s position on
each proposal and divided that total by the total number of
proposals in which each legislator voted. A legislative proposal
is not figured into the vote record percentage if a legislator,
for whatever reason, did not vote or if the proposal failed
before the legislator had an opportunity to vote.
