Long Beach Area Chamber Holds Elected Officials Accountable
 

The 26 Most Important State Legislative Proposals of 2010 for the Long Beach Business Community and How Long Beach's Legislators Voted

This past year was another busy year for the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce as the Chamber focused its advocacy efforts on the 26 most important legislative proposals that would have the greatest impact on the Long Beach business community. The Chamber studied each proposal and took a position of support or opposition by communicating those positions with each Long Beach legislator. This year, all legislators scored below the 50 percent mark, with the exception of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“The business community needs to remain vigilant when communicating our positions to our legislators. This years’ scores are well below the expectation of our membership,” stated LaDonna DiCamillo, Chair of the Long Beach Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee. “To continue down the same path with our legislators next year would be counterproductive; we need our legislators to understand that business – both large and small – will get Long Beach and California back on track. Long Beach takes great pride in providing for its own and as well as leading the way for the rest of the surrounding business communities in the economic recovery,” continued DiCamillo.

“The Long Beach Area Chamber has the responsibility to work with our local state legislators to inform them of our business community’s point of view on important issues,” stated Randy Gordon, President and CEO of the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. “As we move forward into next year’s legislative session, the Chamber will continue to seek ways to better communicate its positions with our area legislators and educate each of them on the importance of their decision on the Long Beach business community,” continued Gordon.

The Long Beach Chamber lobbied Senators Alan Lowenthal and Rod Wright and Assembly Members Warren Furutani, Bonnie Lowenthal, and Isadore Hall to OPPOSE 13 legislative proposals and SUPPORT 13 proposals. The Chamber’s positions on each of the 26 legislative proposals are available online at www.LongBeachAdvocacy.biz including summaries and explanations of why the Chamber opposed and supported each proposal.

To reach the “Percentage FOR pro-jobs legislation,” the Long Beach Area Chamber tallied the number of times our legislators voted for the Chamber’s position on each proposal and divided that total by the total number of proposals in which each legislator voted. A legislative proposal is not figured into the vote record percentage if a legislator, for whatever reason, did not vote or if the proposal failed before the legislator had an opportunity to vote.
